In 2020 black women, once again, we’re the face of strength and courage. From protesting for Black Lives Matter to daily disheartening interviews as a result of our son, brother, or friend being gunned down. Tbh being black is traumatic. I fully understand and experience the anguish.
However, being a social justice warrior or a full-time masculina will not have a positive impact on your day-to-day life. I am not saying marching nor expressing our frustration is wrong, but I do feel there are other, possibly better, alternatives to creating change. Starting with ourselves. Developing soft skills and a gentle aura will do more good for your life than a passionate IG post ever could.
What are soft skills?
Simply put, soft skills combine emotional intelligence, being self-awareness, and our ability to connect and influence others (interpersonal skills). Therefore, by refining our presentation and how we maneuver in the world we take the first step in controlling our narrative. We are delicate kind hearted beautiful women and we deserve everything a woman would want.. it’s time we realize our power and rightfully take it.

Types of Soft Skills
- Communication skills
- Interpersonal skills
- Ability to take critique well
- Problem solving skills
- Positive outlook
- Making people feel good about themselves and their abilities
People with great soft skills are amazing conversationalist. They are a chameleon to their settings, while appearing sincere. For this reason others find it easy to connect with them.
In my opinion, most of us need healing, unlearning, and learning new habits. Many women never grasp the value of their femininity or how to use it as a tool for a better life. Which is unfortunate because it is one of a woman’s biggest asset. Soft skills make you a charming woman. And a charming intelligence woman will get everything she wants.
Ways to develop your soft skills
- Put yourself in more social settings: practice makes better, and we need practice. Make networking a priority and learn different personality types.
- Study social cues and body language: during conversations you should be able to pick up on non-verbals, so that you can determine how others feel and proceed accordingly.
- Keep a smile on your face: being open and friendly is inviting. Energy is easily transferable, so keeping ours positive sets a good precedence.
- Work on speaking voice: tone matters.. a lot! We have to become especially aware of how we sound to others.
- Be responsive and less reactive: this has to do with listening skills and the ability to take criticism. Be slow to anger and quick to forgive. Also, learn to work on being less defensive.
- Keep criticism to a minimum: no one wants to hear bad things about themselves, so be mindful in your words
- Educate yourself: Read every article, instagram post, and book you can find on refinement and self development. Just like anything else the more you study the more information you can retain.
